Can You Swim at Heart Reef?

No: Heart Reef is protected and nobody swims at the formation. Where people snorkel on Hardy Reef instead, the stinger season, and how to see the heart.

Updated November 2026

No. Heart Reef is protected, and swimming, snorkelling and diving at the formation itself are not permitted: Tourism and Events Queensland and Tourism Whitsundays both say so. You see the heart from the air. You can get in the water elsewhere on Hardy Reef, the reef it sits in, from a pontoon moored there for the day.

Why nobody swims at the heart

Heart Reef lies inside Hardy Reef. The day pontoon is moored on Hardy Reef, not on the heart.

Tourism and Events Queensland puts it plainly: for years Heart Reef could only be admired from above on scenic flights, and you cannot swim or dive at the formation because it is protected. Tourism Whitsundays adds where the swimming happens instead: at nearby lagoons, pontoons and designated sites within Hardy Reef.

The scenic flights do not change that. They are planes that fly over Heart Reef and return to the airfield; none of them lands on the reef or on the water. And a boat does not show you the shape: from the water the heart is just more reef.

Where people do get in the water on Hardy Reef

Cruise Whitsundays runs the day trip. Its Great Barrier Reef Adventure Cruise leaves Port of Airlie at 8:00 am and is back about 6:10 pm (Cruise Whitsundays timetable, checked November 2026), with about four hours at a pontoon moored 39 nautical miles offshore at Hardy Reef. From the pontoon you can snorkel and swim, watch from an underwater observatory, or ride a semi-submersible. Snorkel gear is included, and diving and a guided snorkel cost extra. It is from US$226 a person (checked November 2026), with free cancellation up to 2 days before.

The pontoon is on Hardy Reef, but the heart is not part of the day. Helicopter flights over Heart Reef from the pontoon are an optional extra, subject to availability. The Hardy Reef pontoon day goes through the day hour by hour, and what it leaves out.

The one trip that sets you down close to the heart is Hamilton Island Air’s helicopter from Hamilton Island, which lands at a pontoon in the Heart Reef lagoon and is booked direct. Even there, no one swims at Heart Reef itself. See the Heart Island helicopter.

The stinger season

Marine stingers, box jellyfish and Irukandji among them, are found in tropical Queensland waters all year, and the risk is higher in the marine stinger season, November to May. The Queensland Government suggests a full-body lycra suit, swimming at patrolled beaches, and swimming inside stinger nets where there are any (Queensland Government, checked November 2026). On the pontoon day the snorkel gear includes wetsuits and stinger suits, so you do not need your own.

The beaches have the same season. whitehaven-beach-tours.com covers swimming at Whitehaven Beach month by month.

Snorkelling closer in, with the heart from the air

If you want to see the heart and swim on the same day, Ocean Rafting’s Fly Raft Package starts with a 60-minute flight over Heart Reef, Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, then spends the day on fast boats: snorkelling on an inner fringing reef (two sites on the North Whitehaven option, one on the South), the walk to the Hill Inlet Lookout and lunch on Whitehaven Beach. The snorkel gear and a sun suit or wetsuit are included. It is US$388 a person (checked November 2026), and the Queensland public-holiday surcharge is extra.

If the heart is what you came for

Then you want a flight, not a swim. Fly Australia’s Whitsunday Islands and Heart Reef Scenic Flight takes 65 minutes from Airlie Beach over the islands, Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet to Hardy Reef, Hook Reef and Heart Reef, with a window seat for everyone. It is US$240 a person (checked November 2026).
