Hardy Reef Pontoon Day

Cruise Whitsundays' 10-hour day to its pontoon at Hardy Reef: snorkelling, the observatory, the price, and why it does not show you Heart Reef.

Updated November 2026

The pontoon day is how you snorkel the outer reef at Hardy Reef, the reef Heart Reef sits in, without flying. It does not show you the heart. Cruise Whitsundays’ From Airlie Beach: Great Barrier Reef Adventure Cruise is from US$226 a person (checked November 2026) for a 10-hour day with snorkel gear, an underwater observatory, a semi-submersible ride and lunch.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

Free cancellation runs until 2 days before, not the 24 hours most flights here allow. Large bags and luggage are not allowed on board.

How the day runs

The boat leaves Port of Airlie in Airlie Beach at 8:00 am and is back about 6:10 pm. Cruise Whitsundays also runs the day from Daydream Island (7:35 am, back 6:00 pm) and Hamilton Island (9:00 am, back 5:00 pm) (Cruise Whitsundays, checked November 2026); the GetYourGuide listing is the Airlie Beach departure. The cruise runs out through the Whitsunday Islands to a pontoon moored 39 nautical miles from shore at Hardy Reef, where you spend about four hours.

On the pontoon:

  • In the water: snorkel and swim off the pontoon, with snorkel gear included. Wetsuits and stinger suits come with the gear.
  • Staying dry: the underwater observatory, and a guided ride in a semi-submersible over the coral.
  • Food: morning tea, a buffet lunch and afternoon tea, with tea and coffee. Drinks from the bar cost extra.
  • Extras you pay for on the day: scuba diving and a guided snorkel.

Bring swimwear, a towel, a hat, sunscreen, a light jacket and a card or cash for the extras.

Which pontoon it is

Cruise Whitsundays has two pontoons at Hardy Reef. Reefworld takes overnight guests only (Cruise Whitsundays, checked November 2026). The day trip goes to the other one, Heart Pontoon (Cruise Whitsundays, checked November 2026), which reopened after a refurbishment in July 2026 (Travel Weekly, 13 July 2026). Some descriptions of the day still name Reefworld; the day trip moors at Heart Pontoon.

What the day does not include: the heart

Map of Hardy Reef with Heart Reef marked inside it, Hook Reef to the south and Line Reef to the north
Hardy Reef, with Heart Reef inside it and Hook Reef and Line Reef beside it.

Heart Reef is inside Hardy Reef, but its shape shows only from above, and nobody swims at the formation itself. From the pontoon you see coral, not a heart. Helicopter flights over Heart Reef are an optional extra on the day, subject to availability; they are not in the cruise price, and Cruise Whitsundays’ day-trip page publishes no price for them (checked November 2026).

So if the heart is the point of your trip, the pontoon day alone will disappoint you.
