Heart Island Helicopter
The one trip that lands near Heart Reef: a helicopter from Hamilton Island to a pontoon in the Heart Reef lagoon, booked direct, and why scenic flights do not land.
The only trip that sets you down beside Heart Reef is Hamilton Island Air’s Heart Island tour: a helicopter from Hamilton Island to a pontoon near the heart. Hamilton Island Air’s own site, where it is called Journey to the Heart, prices it at A$1,470 a person (checked November 2026). Hamilton Island Air sells it direct; it is not on GetYourGuide or Viator.
What the Heart Island trip is

The helicopter flies from Hamilton Island, one of the Whitsunday Islands, out to the outer reef and lands at a private pontoon in the Heart Reef lagoon (Tourism Whitsundays; Tourism and Events Queensland). It is the closest anyone gets to the heart. Hamilton Island Air describes a glass-bottom boat tour around Heart Reef from the pontoon, and optional snorkelling in an adjacent lagoon (Hamilton Island Air, checked November 2026). You still do not swim at Heart Reef itself: the formation is protected, and swimming and diving there are not permitted.
Because it is sold direct, ask Hamilton Island Air what the price includes, how long you spend on the pontoon and what the weight rules are before you plan round it.
Why the scenic flights do not land
The flights on the booking sites are fixed-wing planes: Fly Australia’s, Ocean Rafting’s and Whitsunday Air Tours’. They fly over the islands and Heart Reef and return to the airfield they left from. None of them lands on the reef, on a pontoon or on a beach.
Landing on the reef is regulated. The Reef Authority’s plan of management for the Whitsundays sets designated aircraft landing areas at Hardy Reef and Bait Reef (Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, 2022). A trip that lands is a different product from a sightseeing flight, and the planes on these flights are land planes, not seaplanes.

Other trips that land somewhere
- By seaplane: Hamilton Island Air also flies a seaplane over the reef and Heart Reef that lands on the water at Whitehaven Beach, A$830 a person (Hamilton Island Air, checked November 2026). Tourism and Events Queensland also names Air Whitsunday for a seaplane flight over the reef that lands at Whitehaven Beach. Both are booked direct.
- By helicopter to the Hardy Reef pontoon: Hamilton Island Air’s Reef Discovery flies both ways to Cruise Whitsundays’ reef pontoon, on a 60-minute flight that takes in the outer reef and Heart Reef, at A$1,020 a person with a minimum of two. Its Fly / Cruise tour, a helicopter out and the catamaran back with about two hours at Cruise Whitsundays’ Heart Pontoon, is A$720 a person (A$670 a child aged 2 to 13), and Cruise / Fly runs it the other way at the same price (Hamilton Island Air, checked November 2026). Neither lands at Heart Reef itself.
- By helicopter to the beach: Hamilton Island Air’s Heart Reef & Whitehaven Stopover is a scenic helicopter flight over the reef and the islands that lands on Whitehaven Beach for about 50 minutes, A$925 a person (Hamilton Island Air, checked November 2026). It does not land at Heart Reef.
- By boat, after a flight: Ocean Rafting’s Fly Raft Package does not land the plane anywhere, but the same day takes you by fast boat to the Hill Inlet Lookout and onto Whitehaven Beach, with snorkelling on an inner fringing reef. It is US$388 a person (checked November 2026).
- On a pontoon, without a landing: Cruise Whitsundays’ Great Barrier Reef Adventure Cruise spends about four hours at a pontoon on Hardy Reef, where helicopter flights over Heart Reef are an optional extra, subject to availability. See the Hardy Reef pontoon day.
Helicopter or plane
From the air, the heart looks the same whichever aircraft you are in. What the helicopter adds is the landing and the time on the pontoon, and it starts from Hamilton Island rather than Airlie Beach.
If seeing the shape is what matters, Fly Australia’s Whitsunday Islands and Heart Reef Scenic Flight does that from Airlie Beach in 65 minutes, over Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet as well, for US$240 a person (checked November 2026). Can you swim at Heart Reef? covers where people get in the water instead.
