Heart Reef lies inside Hardy Reef in the Coral Sea, 76 km in a straight line from Whitsunday Airport near Airlie Beach. Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach are on the way; Hamilton Island Airport and Whitsunday Coast Airport near Proserpine are the other two airports.

Heart Reef sits in Hardy Reef, part of the outer Great Barrier Reef beyond the Whitsunday Islands, in the Coral Sea. From Whitsunday Airport the line out to the reef crosses the islands, which is why every Heart Reef flight also shows you Whitehaven Beach and the sand of Hill Inlet.

The three airports, and the fourth airfield

  • Whitsunday Coast Airport, near Proserpine, is the commercial airport. It is 30 minutes from Airlie Beach and 12 km south of Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast Airport, checked November 2026); by road it is 38 km to Airlie Beach. No scenic flight sold here takes off from it, though the van for Whitsunday Air Tours' flight can collect you there.
  • Whitsunday Airport, at Flametree near Shute Harbour, is the airfield the scenic flights use. By road it is 8.7 km from the centre of Airlie Beach, and the courtesy buses take 10 to 15 minutes. Fly Australia’s flight and Ocean Rafting's one-hour flight both start here.
  • Hamilton Island Airport is on Hamilton Island, among the islands. The helicopter that lands near Heart Reef flies from Hamilton Island and is booked direct; see the Heart Island helicopter. Ocean Rafting's one-hour flight on GetYourGuide flies from Whitsunday Airport and does not pick up from or leave from Hamilton Island.
  • Laguna Quays Airport, south along the coast, is where Whitsunday Air Tours' 70-minute flight takes off; its listing allows about 30 minutes each way for the van from Airlie Beach.

If you are searching for a Heart Reef shuttle, Heart of Reef Shuttles is an airport-transfer company between Whitsunday Coast Airport and Airlie Beach, not a reef trip.

Hardy Reef is in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. In the Reef Authority’s plan of management for the Whitsundays, it gives its name to the Hardy Reef unit, which also takes in Line, Hook, Barb and Bait reefs, and has designated aircraft landing areas at Hardy Reef and Bait Reef (Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, 2022). The Reef Authority’s environmental management charge on a sight-seeing flight is A$0.40 an excursion (checked November 2026); Fly Australia’s price includes marine park fees.

Heart Reef itself is protected: you cannot swim, snorkel or dive at the formation. Can you swim at Heart Reef? covers where people get in the water instead.
